The Ins & Outs of Building Birdhouses

The Audubon Society is offering a class on building birdhouses and how to make them attractive to local birds. Some of these include Red-bellied and Downy Woodpeckers, Eastern Screech and Barn Owls, bluebirds, chickadees, and Purple Martins. Everyone will receive drawings and instructions to take home to build different bird houses.The instructor will demonstrate the construction of a one-board birdhouse. The student may bring a hand saw, hammer, and nails and build a house along with the instructor. Class date is December 2 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Tree Waste from Hurricane Ike Converted into Mulch & Compost

The City of Houston Solid Waste Management Department has partnered with Living Earth Technology Co. (LETCO) to produce a quality mulch product called "Living Earth Houston Mulch" which will be prepared from trees and brush collected from the City of Houston. This mulch will be available in bulk directly from Living Earth, and will also be available in bags at Houston area retailers including Lowe's Home Improvement Centers. LETCO has agreed to donate to the City of Houston ten cents for every bag sold and 50 cents for every bulk yard sold. The donated funds will be used to promote recycling programs in Houston.

"Learning for Tomorrow" - Habitats Studies

Armand Bayou Nature Center (ABNC) is excited to announce the availability of a continuing education workshop on Saturday December 13, 2008. This workshop is being funded by a generous grant from the Union Pacific Foundation. There is no fee to attend the workshops. A $25 refundable deposit, however, is required to register. No refunds will be made for no-shows or cancellations after the registration deadline. Workshop registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis until the workshop is full. The workshop is limited to 30 teachers.

Farm Life Demonstration at Armand Bayou Nature Center

Observe life as it once was at the Martyn farm. Each week knowledgeable volunteers demonstrate activities common to daily life on a 19th-century farm in southeast Texas. These vary from butter and cheese making to carpentry and blacksmithing.

Location: For the 9 am tour, meet at 5000 Memorial Drive just west of Shepherd Drive. On street parking is available. For the 11:30 am tour, parking is available at City Parking Lot H (next to Fonde Recreation Center at Sabine Street and Memorial Drive).
