The Citizens' Environmental Coalition's annual Synergy Awards were presented October 23 at a luncheon at the Houston Racquet Club. The awards are to recognize and honor a variety of exceptional environmental achievement, but this event had a definite recycling connection.

The recipients of the Synergy Award for Corporate Awareness went to Anheuser Busch Houston Brewery and the Houston Astros, champion recyclers. The awards were made out of wood from trees felled by Hurricane Ike. Our honorary chair, Annise Parker, was a co-chair of the task force that recommended an overhaul of heavy trash collection to separate the clean organics from other refuse, which led to the recycling contract with Living Earth Technology.

We all had a wonderful time. Special guests included City Council members Peter Brown and Melissa Noriega and some of our founding mothers - Terry Hershey, Hana Ginzbarg, Ann Jones, Marjorie Jester Milby, Kay Crooker, Shirley Wozencraft, Ada Grundy, and Cynthia Rowan Taylor.

We are very appreciative of our sponsors, The Port of Houston Authority, Devon Energy Corporation, Fiesta, the Jacob and Terese Hershey Foundation, Kirksey, Houston Biodiesel, Marathon Oil, Anheuser Busch Houston Brewery, Galveston Bay Foundation, and Evelyn Shanley.

Other winners are: Community Activist Award - Linda Mercer; Army and Sarah Emmott Conservation Award; East Bay Shoreline Restoration Project, Galveston Bay Foundation; Sustainable Planning - Land Tejas Companies, Discovery at Spring Trails; Environmental Education Award - Diana Foss, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; Presidents Award - Texas Master Naturalists, Gulf Coast, Heartwood, and Galveston Chapters, and Founders Award - Roksan Okan-Vick/ Houston Parks Board.
