In collaboration with the Consulate of Australia in Houston, the Museum of Printing History is pleased to present Gelam Nguzu Kazi-Dugong My Son, an exhibition of limited edition linocuts by aboriginal Australian artists from Mua Island in the Torres Strait. The exhibition showcases 33 artworks by four artists: David Bosun, Billy Missi, Victor Motlop and Dennis Nona, winner of the 2007 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award sponsored by Telstra and the Museum and National Gallery of the Northern Territory.
Drawing on ancient traditions of carving and presented in a contemporary form, the Gelam Nguzu Kazi artists have pioneered a unique style of Torres Strait art to tell their histories and stories. Gelam is an important body of work through which the artists explore their social and physical environment, reclaiming and reaffirming their culture for future generations.
The Australian Government values and supports the unique contribution indigenous artists make to the diverse nature of Australian culture. The Gelam Nguzu Kazi exhibition will increase international understanding of the diversity of indigenous Australia and in particular the unique traditions of the western Torres Strait. Produced by the Australian Art Print Network for the Kubin Community Council, this exhibition has been prepared for international touring by Artbank, in partnership with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
This exhibition is supported by Wright Way Presentations, Booker-Lowe Gallery, Houston, the Consulate of Australia in Houston, and the Embassy of Australia, Washington DC. The Museum of Printing History is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.
